When adding an IMAP account to Windows Mail, you may receive the error:

We couldn't access this account: You might need to update your password or give the account permission to sync this device.

The solution is to:

  • Right-click on your account & choose "Account Settings"
  • Select "Change mailbox sync settings"
  • Set "Download new email:" to "as items arrive"
  • Select "Always download full message and internet images"
  • Set Download email from to "any time"
  • Turn on Email
