Domain names have a domain ending called top-level domain, and country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) indicate the site relating to the specific country.
For example, if you want to build a website for an Australian business, you need a ".au" domain.
IANA is responsible for global coordination of the DNS Root, IP addressing, and more. ICANN regulates the ccTLDs allocation, and NIC is responsible for registering all regional domains and their management. Characteristics of ccTLDs
Most country-specific domains indicate the region and language of the website. Besides that, they include two letters of the Latin alphabet.
The countries that don't follow those rules are the ones with IDN-ccTLDs. In addition to that, they have one or more variants of the same ccTLD that doesn't use Latin alphabets.
